Focus On Sydney Neighbourhoods – The Spit
Sydney is a vast city with many different neighbourhoods and districts adding their own particular flavour and diversity to the melting pot.
Among the coastal ones is The Spit, and makes up part of the Middle Harbour. The geographical feature where The Spit gains its name is a sandbar which extends beyond Beauty Point on a bend in Middle Harbour, prior to it joining the two other harbours that all form Port Jackson.
The Spit today is a focal point for water based activities in the area. Both the Middle Harbour Yacht Club the 16-Foot Skiff Club are based in The Spit.
The marinas and a plethora of restaurants and watering holes give an almost Riviera feel to The Spit where many locals and tourists alike gather to enjoy the waterfront. Close to the water there are BBQ areas, a kids playground and harbour swimming.
Restaurants
Afous, is a stylish Moroccan themed restaurant with some tables facing the water, the owner allows byo which is at no charge. Ormeggio is a fine dining restaurant on the marina, offering superb views. Amongst the extensive French / Mediterranean choices is a 12 course degustation highlighting the chef’s finesse, not the cheapest in town but well worth the money.
Cala Luna gets rave reports from nearly everybody that goes there, it is one of the top Italian restaurants in the whole of Sydney, Casa Luna is much more than just a restaurant, it has many private function rooms for weddings, business meetings, birthdays and just about any event you can dream up.
Tran’s Vietnamese Restaurant, a taste of southeast Asia. Tran’s offers authentic Vietnamese food, which is very fresh, simple, healthy and easy to digest. All their herbs are home grown by owner and chef, Lanna, the sauces home-made and the ingredients are of the finest quality.
Cafes
Plonk Beach Cafe, a perfect place to chill and have a delicious breakfast or lunch. Sip a latte reclining on a wicker chair on the huge deck, watching harbour life unfold. The Boathouse is a popular beachside cafe offering hearty comfort food, own blend coffee, and freshly baked cakes.
Bars & Pubs
The Glenmore Hotel, a three level establishment offering tasty food, a cocktail bar and a busy rooftop bar. Enjoy a drink with a superb harbour view. Custom House Bar, is an atmospheric converted 19th Century pub with a relaxing beer garden. Offering authentic pub grub and a craft ale to wash it all down with.
Grandma’s Bar, is a kitsch basement bar with exposed brick walls to give that extra subterranean feel. The cocktails to say the least are original and have some surprising takes on standard recipes.
If you like American themed bars then Stitch Bar is for you. A busy bar that serves excellent cocktails and typical diner type food. Burgers, tacos dogs and fries.
The Spit certainly is worth a visit, whether for a tourist or a weekend resident to enjoy some watersports, take a quick coffee, enjoy some pub grub or to dine out on some rather special food.
